On-Grid

An on-grid system, in which you draw power from the local utility company or other established source, is modeled after a traditional house power setup. The only difference between a tiny house and a regular house is that the electrical hookup is probably a less permanent one, since the tiny house is usually made to move. Therefore, you have to run a wire to the house, instead of the connection being permanently attached.

There are standardized hookups that recreational vehicles employ for electricity, and tiny house hookups mirror these. In a campground or an RV park, there is a means to connect your RV or camper to the electrical source via a cable. You can build a connection point for a cable like this into your tiny house. These cables come in various amp ratings, and those ratings are tied to how much electric use you anticipate in your tiny house. If you have a rather sizeable tiny house with a washer, dryer, dishwasher, air conditioning, electric heat, electric stove, and electric hot water, you’re going to need a lot of electricity, and you will therefore need a higher amp rating on the cable. For a tiny house, you typically need a 30-amp or 50-amp rating.
